Blessings of Star and Stone!
Welcome to Highland Oak Nemeton, a Druid Grove in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, that is affiliated with the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD).
Our central values are compassion, tolerance, acceptance, inclusiveness, and respect for all life. We completely reject any expression of racism, sexism, religious intolerance, homophobia, and transphobia. We are open to followers of all faiths and none, regardless of gender, gender expression or identity, sexual orientation, or ethnic origin. Just as OBOD has always stood for and continues to stand for equality and freedom for all, standing shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with those seeking equal civil rights for all, so do we, as a grove in the order, stand for these same values.
Why Druidry Now?
You may be feeling that in our modern lives we have separated ourselves from Nature and are out of touch with the needs of our species and our world. You may be looking for a philosophy, a spirituality, or perhaps just ideas, that can help you get back in touch with Nature again, an ecological spirituality, if you will. It has been said that the ecological pragmatism of indigenous peoples was a great deal more realistic in terms of conservation ethics than the more intellectual monotheistic philosophies of the revealed religions.
These Old Ways, reinterpreted for our times, can offer us the kind of spirituality that we need to heal the separation that has occurred between ourselves and our environment. Druidry is one such Way; in the video below we see seven of the gifts Druidry can offer to our modern lives.
Our Chosen Chief, Eimear Burke, recently said that she believes Druidry’s power today lies in its openness, which she says can be summed up by the Irish expression “aontacht in éagsúlacht,” meaning “unity in diversity." “Nature only survives through diversity,” she explains, so if you cultivate a monoculture, planetary health declines. Likewise, she suggests, if you end up advocating something exclusionary, such as white supremacy, nothing good will follow. “It’s not nature-based,” she says, “it’s anathema.” -- New Statesman, June 22, 2021
We welcome all who come in peace and in a spirit of reverence for the natural world to visit with us to explore this vital and dynamic earth-centered spirituality. Whether you already walk the forest path or follow another religion or spirituality but wish to learn more about modern Druidry, you are invited to meet with us and see what it's all about! Please see About Us for details.
